Tools For Parishes

Every parish -- and Catholic entity -- should have an endowment.

For years, educational institutions across the country have recognized that it is wise and fiscally prudent to have an endowment.

But what is an “endowment” and why is it important?

Very simply, an endowment is a resource that lasts forever.  The original principal is invested and only earnings from the endowment fund are used for the school.  Thus, it will provide a permanent source of funding for your parish or organization.

Having a fully funded endowment – say building it up to $1 million or more in size – will reduce your reliance on plate collections, fundraising events, special appeals, etc.  It will also allow you to expand programs and services so more people can be spiritual feed and bring the Gospel to others.

To successfully achieve this goal, it is necessary to cultivate a culture of planned giving.  We recommend four basic steps to get started:

1. Engage pastor, parish council and finance council – collaborate with CCF

  • Show wisdom and power of an endowment
  • Obtain approval for endowment fund

2. Find initial seed money to establish the endowment with CCF

  • $5,000 minimum to get started – however, no distributions until fund reaches $50,000+

3. Identify an individual (or committee) who will champion the planned giving campaign to grow the endowment

  • Three-year commitment to ensure success

4. Start three-year planned giving campaign.
